Engineering leadership in a Chinese industrial context: An exploration using the four capabilities model

Background Over the past two decades, state policies and industrial associations have challenged engineering educators to expand training of future engineers beyond technical competencies broader domain professional skills development, with one key aspect being leadership. Purpose This study adopted four capabilities (4-Cap) model, which views leadership as a set capabilities—sensemaking, relating, visioning, inventing—as conceptual framework explore operationalize core attributes required for in Chinese context. Method A qualitative was conducted through semistructured interviews 23 practicing from different industries (e.g., IT, automobile) various types companies state-owned companies, foreign-invested enterprises) China. Using thematic analysis approach, themes relating within 4-Cap model were reported. Results Qualitatively, more emerged dimension inventing than other dimensions. The patterns suggested central role inventing, predominantly represented an innovative process design-oriented problem-solving project management closely associated Therefore, revisited revised by highlighting construct inventing. Conclusion enriches current understanding leadership, especially results emphasize importance design, problem-solving, social component daily work professionals. Suggestions educational practices research, along call empirical data on China global context, are proposed.
